Governor's Advisory Council for Exceptional Citizens
Time: 7pm Oct. 19 and NOON & 5pm Oct.20 Location: Dover High School Theater- 1 Dover High Drive, Dover, DE Description: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE DATE: October 1, 2018 FOR INFO: : Wendy Strauss (GACEC) 302-739-4553 wendy.strauss@gacec.k12.de.us Or Playwright George Purefoy Tilson 204-498-1956 georgetilsonjr@gmail.com October is Disability History and Awareness Month BOUNDLESS A MUSICAL JOURNEY IS A THEATRICAL PRODUCTION PERFORMED BY DELAWAREANS WITH DISABILITIES Friday, October 19 at 7pm Saturday, October 20 at noon and 5pm Dover High School Theater DOVER, DE – Who would have thought that a march of advocates from Philadelphia to DC would end up choreographed into a theatrical production? In 2003, 200 people with disabilities and their advocates marched from Philadelphia to Wilmington, through central Delaware, west to Baltimore and finally to the U.S. Capitol – to demand their rights as citizens, to be full members of their communities, and to end the practice of shutting people away in facilities. During the 2-week journey, they blocked traffic for 144 miles and camped along the way. Boundless takes the audience on the trek and combines the recollected stories of Delawareans with disabilities and the sometimes-difficult history of our Nation’s struggle to ensure dignity and justice for all. Theater allows us to ponder and celebrate the intricacies of our shared humanity through campfire stories of hardship, resilience and celebration. The cast of thirty is composed of people from the Delaware disability community and supporters ages 6 to 70. Everyone should know that people with disabilities can and should be supported by all of us and be part of the intricate fabric of our communities. Many people without disabilities are discovering that every one of us faces challenges in life – and that we each have moments of brilliance. One of the lines in the show reads, “If you’re fortunate to live a long life, you WILL experience disability...up close and personal!” We’re all in the same boat – and we need each other. We are interdependent! Sign language interpreters and CART services will be available at each performance. Boundless a musical journey will be performed Friday, October 19 at 7pm and October 20 at Noon & 5pm in the theater at Dover High School located on 1 Dover High Drive, in Dover, Delaware. Tickets to the incredible event are FREE and should be obtained in advance for seating at https://boundlessmusical.eventbrite.com. For additional information call 302-739-4553. Commissioned by the Governor’s Advisory Council for Exceptional Citizens (GACEC). Boundless is dedicated to Jamie Wolfe for her unwavering advocacy for individuals with disabilities. Delaware Humanities
Time: 6 PM - 7:30 PM Location: Lewes Public Library, 111 Adams Avenue, Lewes, DE 19958 Description: Chemicals at War: World War I and Economic Nationalism Germany pioneered the development of synthetic organic chemicals in the late 1800s. By 1914, the German firms provided 90 percent of the world's market in synthetic dyes and pharmaceuticals. When World War I interrupted the supply of German chemicals to the United States, Americans made it a patriotic mission to manufacture "German" chemicals in the United States. Building capacity in a complicated industry proved a challenge, and America adopted a variety of policies, including confiscating German subsidiaries and intellectual property. Lecture by Dr. Kathryn Steen, an Associate Professor of History at Drexel University in Philadelphia, where she focuses on the history of industry, technology, and business. She received her PhD from the University of Delaware.
